Ashtanga  &  Ayurveda

Align with your true Nature

Yoga and Ayurveda are sister sciences to a healthy life, and two forces that greatly changed mine.

Come learn with me. Come practice with me.

Hello!  I'm Joanie

Relief in the body, mind and soul hooked me on Ashtanga Yoga over sixteen years ago, leading me to become a certified teacher, offering yoga practice for all.  Using an alignment based approach I learned in India, promotes safety and sustainability to continue our journey of well-being and happiness as long as we choose. Ayurveda teachings are the ‘cherry on top.’  Come practice with me; Come learn with me.  Live your best life; Choose joy.

Tues, Wed, Thurs
4:45 PM - 7:30 PM

Mysore is the traditional way to practice Ashtanga Yoga. In this class the student receives personalized attention (one-on-one) from the teacher for the best approach and advancement as needed. The class has a ‘self-practice’ format, though the teacher helps beginners learn the sequence from the start. Over time the teacher gets to know the student’s practice well, and can aid in their body’s needs, strengths, and weaknesses, finding the best method for each individual. Also, learning how to move the body with regulated breath and to use the bandhas (core locks) creates powerful inner workings. The class is fairly quiet, and the only ‘music’ in the room is the sound of our own breath. It’s an amazing way to learn. Suitable for all levels. Don’t be afraid!

Saturdays
9:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Full Primary led class is traditionally offered once or twice a week, and includes all asanas (postures) in the first series of Ashtanga Yoga. This ninety minute class moves at a medium pace and can be vigorous or steady, depending on one’s approach. The class is generally attended by seasoned Ashtangis who know all or most of the Primary Series postures, or by yoga students having a strong yoga practice of their own. As the class moves through postures in succession, we create inner heat meant to burn toxins as well as ignite digestive fire (agni).

Monday & Wednesday
9:30 AM - 10:45 AM

A great place to start!

This class moves through much of the Ashtanga Primary Series at a slower pace with many added modifiers shown for beginners, those newer to Ashtanga, or students wanting a more accessible version of an Ashtanga led class. We omit some vinyasas, a few sun salutes, and the more challenging postures (for now!) Also intended for those needing a lighter practice here and there, but when the class gets too easy, feel free to join Full Primary!

Beginner friendly and suitable for all levels.

Monthly class
5:30 PM - 6:45 PM

Ongoing study with my teachers in India have led me to understand the value of ‘pre-pose’ stretching before certain postures to discover subtle energetic and muscular movements that aid in proper execution of the pose. Slower holds of these stretches can unlock blockages in the body and energetic channels, helping us to free up tension and stress in the body. This class takes us on an hour exploration, with a fifteen minute meditative ending and rest to add utmost relaxation for all. Class offered intermittently, so please keep your eye on the schedule.

Sundays
5:00 PM - 6:15 PM

This fun led class introduces attendees to some benefits of an Ashtanga practice, core and breath work, then many postures in a modified approach suitable for all. We move through enough poses to get a taste of what goes on in an Ashtanga room, or to just get some yummy movement in the body. The class is suitable for all; brand new to yoga, new to Ashtanga, or seasoned practitioner, and is offered for donations. Bring your mat if you have one!
